Logitech MX Keys vs Apple Magic Keyboard: Which Keyboard Is Better?

I’m a self-proclaimed tech geek looking for a new keyboard. In my search, I pored through multiple product specs and product reviews. It all went down to Logitech MX Keys vs Apple Magic Keyboard, so I put both products to test on this product review.

This isn’t Logitech’s first rodeo. It has been a market leader in computer accessories for as long as I remember, and they’ve been in the industry since the first Mac went out. It’s no surprise that now they’re after Apple’s Magic Keyboard. Can their Logitech MX Keys compete with Apple’s flagship keyboard?

Let’s get started with the review!

Ergonomics

If you tend to spend hours working in front of a screen, you should embrace a flat or even negative incline when typing.

Laptops sits at a zero degree angle, which is actually better for your wrists because reduces the stress on you wrists. With Apple magic laptop coming in at 2.8 degree angle, it’s clear that it’s a better option for ergonomics compared to Logitech’s 6.5 degree angle.

It’s clear that less elevation is better so Apple wins this round.

Portability

There’s a couple of things that improves portability—weight and material. We’re reviewing portability in terms of weight and material.

Both keyboards have great build quality. Both feel sturdy and I also appreciate that they have rubber feet that prevents them from sliding on most surfaces. Apple Magic Keyboard, however, has a sturdier build with its aluminum body. I find it amazing that it’s able to keep the weight down despite the material used.

Logitech MX Mini is made of high-quality plastic, while Apple Magic Keyboard uses a combination of plastic and aluminium. Apple’s keyboard feels more fragile though because of its thinner frame and lighter weight. Apple Magic Keyboard weighs at 0.53 lbs while Logitech’s clocks in at 1.11 lb. Despite the fragile feel to it, I would be more comfortable bringing Apple’s keyboard on a long trip. Logitech MX Mini has a thicker plastic wedge that I feel like might detach from the main keyboard when things get messy in my backpack.

I have to give props to Apple for being able to keep the weight down despite the material used.

Backlighting

Logitech trumps in the features that Apple do not have, and backlighting is one of them. Logitech is extremely useful when working in the evenings, making it great for gaming aside from long horus in the office. What makes their backlighting cool is its proximity sensor.

It lights up when your hands get closer to the keyboard. Granted, backlighting does drain your battery so it’s a good thing that there’s an option to turn this off to extend its battery life.

Typing experience

Despite Apple’s aluminum built, Logitech weirdly feels way more premium than Apple. Logitech MX Keys’s aesthetics is very much Apple-esque. It’s clear that Logitech intended to directly compete with Apple’s Magic Keyboard, and it is a worthy competitor. The typing experience is better with Logitech because of its scissor-switch key mechanism and the size and shape of its keys. You’ll notice that Logitech MX keys have a circular divots that are intended to be “shaped to your fingertips.”

What makes typing nicer with Logitech MX key are the keys. It feels heavier compared to Apple’s thin keys. Logitech MX Keys does not imitate a mechanical keyboard’s typing experience, but it surely is better than Apple’s. It has slightly longer keypresses, as opposed to Apple’s. Because Apple keypresses are shorter, there is a tendency to have typos. The smaller enter and backspace keys are also some other things that other users didn’t like, but those never really bothered me. Just some things to note there.

Those that like the traditional typing feel would love Logitech MX Keys, but if you like your keyboards fast and quiet, Apple Magic Keyboard will be your best bet.

Battery Life

Apple’s Magic Keyboard lasts at least for a month on a full charge using a lightning cable to USB-C port. On the other hand, MX Keys claims that their battery life can last up to five months without the backlighting. I haven’t tried testing this claim because I love having my backlighting on, but some users reports that these five months are months when it’s on standby mode…..not exactly the kind of use case we’d like to see when they make this claim.

With backlighting, MX Keys says that it should last for ten days. I can verify this claim and I’m pretty happy that stayed true to that promise.

Customizability and Other Perks

With Apple’s gated castle and tendency to not accommodate anything outside of Apple, it’s really hard to for the Magic Keyboard to compete with MX Keys to compete on this area. It was surprising though that Apple had instructions on how to use their keyboard for Windows. The only thing noteworthy for Magic Keyboard is its Touch ID.

Among MX Keys main target users are creators, so they have other function keys for emojis, dictation or talk-to-text so you can speak instead of type, and the timeless mic mute or unmute. There’s also the Logitech Options software that allows you to create your own shortcuts.

In my five months of use, I find these function keys to get finicky. The volume control and the mic mute or unmute just stopped working. Nonetheless, I’m sure some setting would fix this but so far, it’s a decent list of perks.

Connectivity

Logitech blows the competition away with its customizability. It’s multi-OS so it works on either Mac, Windows, or Linux. It also allows you to connect to up to 3 devices, there’s even three function keys dedicated for this very feature.

However, there are areas where Logitech MX Keys fall short.

First, it only works with bluetooth. While there is a USB-C port, you can’t really use it to connect to your device. I had times where it would just stop connecting to my device out of nowhere. It hasn’t been a frequent issue but it can be a problem the older the keyboard gets. The keyboard may end up being useless once this wireless connectivity just goes kaput.

Apple Magic Keyboard, on the other hand, offers the ability to connect through bluetooth and a hard-wired connection. This allows the Magic Keyboard to be used for those times when connection is just finicky or when the device is a bit older and isn’t bluetooth compatible. This hard-wired connection will also allow you to quicky jumpstart connecting to a device, especially if you’re using a second-hand keyboard.

I consider reliability to be a more important factor compared to external connectivity, so I would say that this round goes to Apple’s Magic Keyboard.

Apple Magic Keyboard vs Logitech MX Keys: Best For…

Best for Remote Work

Remote workers usually sit for long hours so the ergonomic Apple Magic Keyboard may be a better fit. The keyboard is also lighter and more portable, making it suited for travels. Have I also mentioned that connectivity is less of an issue? When the deadlines matter, you want to make sure that your keyboard does not fail on you.

Best for Gamers

Gaming is not the intended use for either keyboards, but this is not to say that they cannot be used for it. Logitech MX Keys would be a better fit for gaming though, because of the keys just feel better and more natural. Apple Magic Keyboard can be awkward to use and it’s just more prone to typos because of the shorter keypress.

Best for Entertainment

Logitech MX Keys is best for entertainment because it can be used for multiple devices all at once, and it even have dedicated function keys to switch between these devices. There’s also other media keys to control things like volume. The backlighted keys will also be useful for dark rooms and movie nights.

Overall Winner

This was a tough one. In the battle between Logitech MX Keys vs Apple Magic Keyboard, Apple wins best overall by just a smidge. This is with the assumption that you’re in the Mac ecosystem. Apple Magic Keyboard is just more reliable and there’s less points for failure.
