Where to Stay in Hoi An: 6 Best Areas, Hotels & Safety Tips

Where to stay in Hoi An

When planning where to stay in Hoi An, it’s essential to consider your priorities and the type of crowd you want to be around during your stay. This guide highlights the best areas to stay in Hoi An, catering to various preferences and budgets. From budget-friendly accommodations (<$30), to luxurious retreats ($60+), there’s a range of options to suit every traveler’s needs.

Having explored Hoi A firsthand, finding the right neighborhood can be the difference between enjoying its atmosphere or getting overwhelmed with the crowd. During my first visit a few years ago, I initially stayed in An Hoi but found the it to be too crowded. It was too busy and too loud. I later relocated to Cam Pho, which gave me the space I need to decompress after a day in the busy streets of Hoi An.

Whether strolling through the ancient town’s enchanting streets or exploring the surrounding areas by motorbike, each neighborhood offers its own unique charm and appeal.

Where to Stay in Hoi An for First Time Visitors: Minh An

First time visitors in Hoi An will want to see what makes Hoi An popular for travelers, and Minh An is the right neighborhood for that.

Why Stay in Minh An?

where to stay in hoi an

When it comes to experiencing the heart of Hoi An for the first time, Minh An is where you want to be. As someone new to the city, diving into Minh An puts you smack dab in the center of Hoi An’s vibrant pulse. Here, you’ll be right at Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that gives you feel of what it’s like to step back in time. I was completely awestruck by the architecture that has stood for centuries past. Every nook and cranny is almost instagram-worthy and has a story to it.

Walking through the streets of Minh An, it’s impossible not to feel like you’re part of a living, breathing painting. Each corner holds a new surprise, a burst of color, or an intriguing piece of history that just waiting to be noticed. I would recommend taking a slow stroll around the city when it’s less busy, even during the early morning. In the evening, take the farther streets along Thu Bon River and stroll along its banks to soak in the essence of Hoi An. If you stay too close to the centre, it’s too busy and it’s harder to appreciate how the lanterns reflect off the river.

And let’s talk about food. Minh An is a culinary playground, with countless local eateries serving up mouthwatering Vietnamese cuisine. From fragrant pho to crispy banh mi, finding your next meal wouldn’t be that difficult (maybe except for some potential language barrier).

But here’s the thing – Minh An isn’t a well-kept secret. With its photogenic streets and undeniable popularity, snagging a room in the best hotels may need to be done early. So if you want to stay in Minh An, make sure to plan ahead and secure your reservation early.

Things to See and Do in Minh An

  • Explore Old Town: Wander through the narrow lanes and alleys of Old Town, lined with charming Chinese-style shophouses that have been around for centuries past.
  • Visit the Japanese Covered Bridge: Marvel at the iconic Chùa Cầu, a symbol of Hoi An, dating back to 1593, marking the entrance to Old Town with its elegant architecture.
  • Quang Trieu Assembly Hall: Admire the intricate Southeast Asian-style décor of this historic assembly hall, a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage.
  • Ha Ha – Art In Everything gallery: Discover local artistry at this cozy gallery, showcasing works by talented Vietnamese artists.
  • Fukian Assembly Hall: Explore the ornate animal statues and rich history of this ancient hall, dating back to 1697.
  • Phung Hung Ancient House: Immerse yourself in the blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese architectural styles at one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

  • Madam Khanh – The Banh Mi Queen: Try one of their mouthwatering Banh Mi sandwich from one of the city’s best street food stands, offering a taste of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Banh Mi Phuong was my favorite when I first visited in 2016, but on my recent visit last year, Banh Mi Queen is now the clear winner. The sauce of Banh Mi Queen brings home the trophy.
  • Streets Restaurant: For dinner, support a social enterprise at Streets Restaurant, where delicious food meets a meaningful cause, making it one of the top dining spots in Hoi An.

What’s the Catch in Minh An?

When it comes to staying in Minh An, there are a few things to consider before staying here. Sure, you’ll be at the heart of all the action, but it comes at a price – quite literally. Be prepared to shell out a bit more for accommodations here, and brace yourself for the hustle and bustle of city life.

And don’t forget about the entrance fee to the Old Town – while it’s a small price to pay for access to Hoi An’s historic charm, it’s something to keep in mind when budgeting for your trip.

Minh An Safety Tip

While Hoi An is generally a safe destination, Minh An does have its share of risks, especially when it comes to pickpocketing. With the crowded streets and bustling markets, it’s easy for thieves to blend in and snatch your belongings when you least expect it.

There’s also an ongoing modus operandi or scam that Matt from the Love.ly Hostel warned me about when I was there. He said that scammers would usually offer tourists a ride but drop them off in a shop where they are forced to make a purchase, so the scammer will get a kickback. He recommended just walking if I end up staying out for too long, instead of getting a ride from a motorcycle or tuktuk.

Be wary of friendly strangers who may be trying to distract you – it could be a ploy to steal your valuables. And if you’re exploring solo, be extra cautious, especially after dark. Remember to keep your belongings close and stay vigilant at all times.

An Hoi Safety Tip

While An Hoi is a lively and exciting destination, it’s important to exercise caution, especially after dark. Many travelers have shared stories of encounters with Xe Om drivers and drug addicts, particularly when under the influence of alcohol. From being overcharged for a ride to more serious threats like robbery or assault, it’s essential to stay vigilant and avoid putting yourself in risky situations.

And for solo female travelers, extra precautions are necessary to ensure your safety and well-being. Remember to trust your instincts and stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

Where to Stay in Hoi An for Backpackers: Cam Pho

For backpackers like myself, Cam Pho is perfect. It’s not too touristy and it’s within my budget. If this is what you’re looking for, then Cam Pho should be on your radar.

Why Stay in Cam Pho?

Where to Stay in Hoi An: 6 Best Areas, Hotels & Safety Tips -

If you’re a backpacker looking to make the most of your time in Hoi An without breaking the bank, Cam Pho is the perfect choice. As someone who loves to travel on a budget, Cam Pho offers everything I need and more. Situated right next to the Old Town, this central neighborhood puts me within walking distance of all the city’s top attractions.

But what sets Cam Pho apart is its affordability. Here, I can find a wide range of accommodation options to suit my budget, from cozy hostels to charming boutique hotels. And the best part? I get to enjoy all the perks of staying downtown without the hefty price tag.

Whether you are looking to stay close to Hoi An’s ancient streets or venture out into the scenic countryside, Cam Pho is the perfect base for most adventures. And with its convenient location and budget-friendly accommodations, you’ll be able to make the most of your time in this amazing city.

Things to See and Do in Cam Pho

  • Tailor Experience: Treat yourself to a unique shopping experience at one of Hoi An’s renowned tailors like Kimmy Tailor, where you can have custom-made clothing tailored to fit you perfectly, creating a whole new wardrobe to take home. I still have my custom-made suit from this shop from almost a decade ago…and this is the same suit I’m wearing for my wedding that’s coming up.
  • Sunset Delight: Witness the breathtaking beauty of a Hoi An sunset as the sky transforms into a palette of vibrant colors, casting a mesmerizing glow over the river.
  • Bike Adventure: Rent bikes and go on a scenic tour along the river and through the countryside, encountering indigenous farm animals like water buffalos as you pedal through the picturesque landscape.
  • Culinary Delights: Enjoy local delicacies at Thanh Cao Lau, where you can savor the flavors of cao lau, a traditional dish unique to Hoi An, known for its rich and aromatic taste.

What’s the Catch in Cam Pho?

While it’s conveniently located just a short distance from the Old Town, don’t expect to be surrounded with the ancient establishments like it is in the other districts in Hoi An. The landmarks are near but not right at Cam Pho. This modern part of town may lack the historic appeal of its neighbors, but it does offer easy access to the city’s main attractions – just be prepared to add a few extra minutes to your journey.

Cam Pho Safety Tip

Crossing the chaotic streets of Vietnam can be a daunting task, especially for pedestrians. With vehicles of all shapes and sizes vying for space on the roads, it’s essential to stay alert and cautious at all times. While Hoi An does have traffic lights, not all locals adhere to the rules, so it’s up to you to watch out for oncoming traffic, even when you have the right of way.

And don’t be alarmed if you encounter some aggressive drivers – honking horns and loud shouts are just part of the local traffic culture. Just remember to stay calm, stay focused, and stay safe.

Where to Stay in Cam Pho

Cam Pho has accommodations for almost any budget, so there’s a lot of options to choose from but there’s a handful that stand out.

For beach lovers, Cam An should be on your list. This neighborhood brings you close to the sands, beaches and surfing. Trust me, I’ve spent hours soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches of Hoi An, and Cam An is a decent home base for your beach getaway.

What I love most about Cam An is the easy access to some of the most stunning beaches in Hoi An. Whether you prefer the lively atmosphere of An Bang beach or the peaceful shores of Cua Dai beach, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for a stone’s throw away from your accommodations.

Experience the traditional Vietnamese cooking class, complete with a visit to the market and a sit-down lunch to savor the flavors of your creations amidst the picturesque surroundings of the herb village.

What’s the Catch in Cam An?

While it offers proximity to the beach, don’t expect the same level of local charm found in other parts of Hoi An. This neighborhood may lack the authentic vibe of its counterparts and requires a bit more effort to reach the Old Town. Plus, it’s worth noting that while the beach is beautiful, it may not be the most stunning in Vietnam.

Cam An Safety Tip

While Hoi An’s beaches typically have lifeguards, it’s essential to stay safe when swimming in the ocean. The waves can be rough and powerful, posing a risk to swimmers, especially during the months of October to March. To stay safe, stick to designated swimming areas and listen to any warnings from lifeguards. Remember, your safety is paramount, so always err on the side of caution when enjoying the beach.

Don’t expect the same bustling streets and vibrant nightlife found in other parts of Hoi An. This peaceful neighborhood may be a bit too quiet for those seeking constant stimulus, and you may find yourself looking for things to entertain you or more food options within walking distance.

Cam Chau Safety Tip

If you’re planning a boat trip to explore Hoi An’s waterways, safety should be your top priority. Always follow instructions from your guide and make sure to wear a life jacket at all times. And if you’re feeling unwell or unsure about taking the trip, it’s better to err on the side of caution and sit it out. Your safety is paramount, so don’t take unnecessary risks when enjoying the beauty of Hoi An’s rivers and canals.

Cam Thanh Safety Tip

One of the most common scams in Hoi An is overcharging, and tourists, especially international visitors, can easily fall victim to it. Whether you’re dining at a restaurant or simply snapping photos on the street, always clarify prices upfront to avoid being hit with exorbitant charges later. And if you encounter aggressive behavior from vendors, it’s best to calmly walk away rather than engaging in a confrontation.
