Maya Mobile eSIM – The Best All-Around eSIM

This is my take on Maya Mobile. In this Maya Mobile review, I’ll explain what makes it stand out compared to the many eSIMs out there and why I recommend it for both short-term and frequent travelers, such as remote workers.

But why should you trust my insights? Well, I’ve been on the road for quite some time now, hopping from one country to another. When I travel, I usually have three eSIMs that I have as a backup so you can be sure that I have some opinion to share about eSIMs.

If you just want a short answer on whether it’s worth using Maya Mobile, the answer is yes. But if you want to know why, then keep on reading!

Pros & Cons of Maya Mobile eSIM

Like any other service, there’s pros and cons, but to save you some time, I can tell you that Maya Mobile eSIM performs really well when compared to the top eSIMs in the market.

Pros of Maya Mobile

  • Extensive Coverage: Maya Mobile eSIM offers coverage in 197 countries, ensuring travelers can stay connected almost anywhere they go.

  • Privacy Protection: With 100% privacy and end-to-end encryption, Maya Mobile eSIM prioritizes user security and complies with global privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA.

  • Auto-Switching Feature: Maya Mobile’s auto-switching feature ensures users always connect to the strongest available network, enhancing reliability and connectivity.

Cons of Maya Mobile

  • Connection Issues: Some users have reported poor connection despite having full signal, leading to frustration and inconvenience.

  • Customer Support: Maya Mobile’s customer support response time is criticized for being slow, impacting user experience when assistance is needed.

  • Limited Support Channels: With support only available through email, users may find it challenging to get immediate assistance or resolve issues promptly.

  • Lack of Mobile App: Maya Mobile lacks a dedicated mobile app, relying solely on a web portal for tracking data usage, potentially limiting convenience and accessibility.

  • Billing Concerns: There have been reports of billing discrepancies and charges after cancellation, highlighting potential issues with the billing process.

  • eSIM Activation Issues: Maya Mobile’s eSIM activation process, primarily through QR codes, can be improved, with users noting the need for more thorough troubleshooting documentation.

Maya Mobile earns a solid 4 out of 5 for coverage, boasting connectivity in 197 countries (200+ if you include the regional plans). This extensive coverage ensures that you can stay connected anywhere you go, offering convenience the moment you land in your destination. Now, you won’t need to worry if there’s even SIM kioks right inside airports.

Testing them in South America, they surely did the job too. Because there were two networks to choose from, I was almost always connected and with good signal in Peru and Colombia. The exceptions may be the very remote areas I’ve been where I have very low expectations for signals because of high elevations.

Just a caveat though – while Maya Mobile’s coverage is impressive, occasional connection issues reported by some users may detract from its overall reliability. Comparing it to other eSIM providers, only Airalo can go head-to-head with Maya Mobile’s coverage. Airalo is on par or slightly better in terms of the number of countries covered, but its reliability is not as good as Maya Mobile’s.

Plan Variety

Maya Mobile earns a respectable 4 out of 5 for plan variety, providing a wide range of options, including prepaid and unlimited plans for most destinations. This diverse selection allows users to choose a plan that best suits their specific travel needs and preferences, whether they require a short-term prepaid plan or an unlimited plan for longer stays.

Among other eSIM providers, Maya Mobile has the most flexible and organized data plans. For almost every destination they have plans for 5 days, 10 days, 15 days, and 30 days. And for each of these durations, expect to see data plans from 3GB to unlimited data.

Despite the extensive plan variety, Maya Mobile eSIM does not offer any SMS number with their plans so that’s the biggest downside so far. This is where other providers such as Airhub and Nomad eSIM has an edge.

With a rating of 4 out of 5 for price, Maya Mobile eSIM offers competitive pricing, especially for regional and single-country plans, making it an appealing option for budget-conscious travelers like me.

How did I came to this conclusion? It was a bit tricky to make the apples-to-apples comparison but after organizing all the data plans, it’s pretty clear that Maya Mobile eSIM offers way more value. As an example, Maya Mobile offers USD 36 for a 5GB data in Latin America, but Airalo charges almost double at USD 60. Nomad eSIM offers USD 14 for their European plan and Airalo charges higher at USD 20, when Maya Mobile undercuts them at USD 12. You can make the comparison yourself but the data is very clear.

The affordability of Maya Mobile’s plans may be just among its many strengths, and it’s a deciding factor if you ask me.

Ease of Use

Maya Mobile eSIM receives a rating of 3 out of 5 for ease of use, mostly due to the absence of a dedicated mobile app.

Most eSIM providers now have a mobile app to make it easier for travelers to top up or track data usage while on the move.

They have a web portal though that allows you to do those and more, but again, there’s that additional friction that’s really unnecessary.

There’s also reports of difficulty in activating the eSIM. I never had this problem, but looking at their troubleshooting guides, it’s also sparse so I can see where people can get frustrated with.

When compared to other eSIM providers, Maya Mobile eSIM can use more improvements in making it easier to use so it can compete better with both Airalo and Holafly.

Customer Support

Maya Mobile eSIM garners a rating of 3 out of 5 for customer support, mostly because they have limited channels for support.

They primarily rely on email to help customers when other eSIMs now provide support though other channels familiar to travelers like WhatsApp or their mobile apps.

Other users also report slow response times, but it may be just a one-off situation. I personally reached out with questions about the data plan I was interested in and they responded promptly and in great detail.

They also respond quickly in Trustpilot complaints or concerns, so I would still say that support is decent. Just a bit lacking because of its limited channels.

Value-Added Features

Maya Mobile eSIM earns a commendable 4 out of 5 for value-added features, offering privacy protection, a money-back guarantee, and auto-switching capability.

Let’s talk about each of them. I think it’s really in this area Maya Mobile really does well.

First, the privacy protection. With identity theft being rampant these days, I appreciate that Maya Mobile goes the extra mile and complies with global privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA. You can even use it with the VPN of your choice, which is great for remote workers like myself who have to use a very specific VPN to access the resources I need.

Next up is the money-back guarantee. Sadly, not all eSIM providers offer it, and if they do, they only do so if customers get really angry.

Aside from Maya Mobile eSIM, only Airhub seems to offer this guarantee. This is very important especially if you’re traveling to a remote place where you’re not sure of the network connectivity.

Third value-add feature I love is the auto-switching capability. A handful of eSIM providers offer this like Airhub and Nomad eSIMs. This is the feature that will connect you to the strongest network available in their data plan. If you’re working remotely, this should be one feature you must look for when getting an eSIM. It was a lifesaver for me when I was working from Colombia because I was able to get Claro as a network, which is a tier 1 network provider.

Alternatives to Maya Mobile

Holafly – Holafly stands out as one of the best alternatives to Maya Mobile due to its exceptional customer support. With Holafly, users can expect prompt and efficient assistance from knowledgeable support agents via various channels, including live chat, email, and even WhatsApp.

Airalo – Airalo’s top-notch mobile app is well-known to offer seamless navigation, intuitive features, and a user-friendly interface. This makes purchasing and managing eSIM plans convenient and straightforward, enhancing the overall user experience.

Airhub – distinguishes itself by offering the added benefit of a mobile number, addressing a key weakness of Maya Mobile. This feature provides users with greater flexibility and convenience, allowing them to make calls and send SMS messages using their eSIM. A feature that Maya Mobile does not have

Collectively, Holafly, Airalo, and Airhub present compelling alternatives to Maya Mobile eSIM, with each offering better services in the areas where Maya Mobile fall short in. If you’re interested in other eSIMs, I rounded up and reviewed the leading eSIMs in the market so you can have an objective comparison across the many eSIMs out there.

Final Thoughts

In wrapping up my review of Maya Mobile, it’s clear that this eSIM provider has its pluses and downsides.

On the bright side, Maya Mobile eSIM offers extensive coverage across 197 countries, making it one of the eSIM providers with the widest coverage (just second to Airalo). Its commitment to privacy and encryption adds an extra layer of security, and the variety of prepaid and unlimited plans cater to different budgets and needs. All these combined are big benefits for any traveler.

However, Maya Mobile eSIM falls short in ease of use and the lack of mobile number with its plans.

These downsides are minor, in my honest opinion. What matters more is the value for its price, and the reliability, which it clearly delivers. The upside you get for the price you pay is more than enough (at least for me) to try Maya Mobile.

Ultimately, your choice of eSIM provider should align with your travel habits and priorities, whether it’s reliable connectivity or top-notch customer service. Either way, there’s no harm in trying Maya Mobile because of their money back guarantee. Give it a try on your next trip with the link below
